The zine series “un//masking the performing arts” (2025) is based on a 2-year research in the frame of Lovis’ Transdisciplinarity Master at the Zurich University of the Arts. To avoid harm in neurotypical environments, people use masking as a survival strategy to (un)intentionally hide their neurodivergent aspects. Criticizing the prevailing, dichotomous pathology paradigm of adapting, Lovis’ methodology “un//masking” proposes to “neuroqueer”, ‘glitch’ and “crip” the neuronormative expectations. The zines provide a toolbox for neurodivergent performers reframing un//masking as an activist, self-empowering and playful way of using “disability as method”, ultimately challenging, criticizing and possibly changing neuronormative standards in the performing arts. Lovis is planning to continue this research and self-publish more free zines in the future.
